When the math changes

After losing some original images from my first days of digital photography, I have been diligent in backing up every image before starting to process them. At first the copies were done on CD, then upgraded to DVD.

After the 2010 Bonnechere Cup where two days worth of shooting resulted in 84Gb of photos, that took 56 DVDs to make copies for offsite and onsite backups.

In addition to the 56 DVDs, it took hours to make the backups.

Something had to change, and it allowed another look at the math.

A 1Tb drive costs less than $100. 1Tb of DVDs averaging 3.5Gb per drive and $0.40 per DVD would cost $115.

So now, makes more sense for me to backup all originals on external drives.
